Mr Lyons died of multiple injuries on Sunday morning Ecuadorian time on the final leg of a marathon seven-day ride across the country to raise money for Jersey Hospice Care.

He was one of a group of 60 Islanders who had completed all but 50 kilometres of a gruelling 520-kilometre ride.

The 60-year-old General Hospital porter was hit by the truck on the outskirts of the coastal town of Esmeraldas and died on the way to hospital. A report by Ecuadorian police has concluded that the pick-up truck driver was driving without due care and attention.

Meanwhile, the first members of the 88-strong party of cyclists and trekkers who were part of the Bedell Group Ecuador Challenge have started arriving back in the Island.

• A book of condolence has been opened at the General Hospital in memory of John Lyons. The book has been opened to allow people who knew him to express their thoughts and feelings. It is located next to the hospital chapel on the second floor. The Rev Tony Keogh said that it was open to all who wanted to sign it.
