Teachers vote for pay strikes

Members of the Jersey Teachers’ Association, the local branch of the National Union of Teachers, have voted overwhelmingly in favour of action over the States decision not to give public sector workers a pay rise. It is understood that other unions are also on the verge of industrial action.

Mediation with the States Employment Board will take place in January, but if it is unsuccessful the Island’s 900 teachers could walk out by the end of the month.

JTA president Anne Southern said that the result of the indicative ballot showed that members were not prepared to accept what she called an effective pay cut.
