Perry Khan Courval (21) head-butted the victim in the face, significantly damaging his nose and badly chipping a tooth, the court heard.

Courval, who has had two previous convictions for grave and criminal assault, was told by the court that he only just avoided a custodial sentence. The 21-year-old admitted committing the grave and criminal assault on the man on 28 June at the waterfront, possessing cannabis resin on 29 April at a flat in St Helier and producing cannabis in April at the same address.

The court sentenced him to 220 hours’ community service and 18 months’ probation and banned him from licensed premises for three months.
