Just three Islanders braved the huge walls of water, including local pro wave rider James Hick, who shot to fame last year by becoming the first Briton to conquer the colossal Shipstern’s wave off Tasmania.

James, who is sponsored by Animal and Von Zipper to chase the biggest swells the world’s oceans can muster, was joined by Mark Durbano and Chester Mackley. The trio took it in turns to be towed in to surf the wave with a jetski.

‘It was definitely a real wave, that’s for sure,’ said James, who broke his board during yesterday’s session. ‘I used to go out there when I was really young, but this was my first real time out there. It was quite an experience.’
