The device, called a Seabin, works by sucking 25,000 litres of water an hour through a filter and catching up to 20 kg of litter.
The invention is the result of a crowdfunding campaign launched by two Australian surfers in 2015 and the bins are now in place in more than 50 marinas in 11 countries across the world. It is thought that there are now a total of 232 functioning Seabins worldwide.
The device is designed to collect floating litter – including microplastics just 2 mm in size – in inland waterways and marinas before it has a chance to enter the ocean.
A spokesman for Ports of Jersey said that if it works well, more Seabins could be installed in other marinas.
