Passenger journeys over the bank holiday weekend were down by 84,000 compared to the same weekend last year, and some routes have been trimmed because of the number of people staying at home and not using public transport.

But with essential workers still needing to take journeys to and from work, LibertyBus is maintaining its lifeline services.

And the company has said the firm has a strong plan to ensure it can return to operating as normal as soon as possible, despite taking a financial hit during the crisis.

A spokeswoman for the company said: ‘We have always worked in close partnership with the Government of Jersey and are continuing to do so at this difficult time.

‘We have a strong plan in place to ensure that we can continue to keep the Island moving through this crisis and that we can resume normal service as soon as we are able.

‘Our passenger numbers are obviously significantly down, which shows that people are following the guidelines to stay at home and only make essential journeys.

‘Last week (covering the Easter bank holiday weekend), for example, we made 5,474 passenger journeys. This compares to 89,707 for the same week last year.’

Like many other industries, the company is settling into a new way of working, with a reduced timetable running for the foreseeable future and regular deep cleans taking place in their fleet. The spokeswoman added: ‘Many of our drivers are still working and I’d like to thank all of our staff for the amazing job they are doing at this challenging time. We have increased our cleaning regime both on buses and at the station and drivers are involved in these duties as well.

‘We are also working closely with government organisations and recruitment agencies that are looking at redeploying workers into essential roles.’
