‘Don’t make unnecessary bus journeys’

The bus company reported that passenger numbers dropped to an all-time low earlier this month, but last week the number of journeys began to rise once again.

The operator has reduced the number of services it is running and has advised Islanders that bus journeys should only be taken for essential journeys.

Passenger numbers dropped to 5,474 per week earlier in April, however for the week commencing 20 April, it was 6,814.

LibertyBus chief executive Kevin Hart said: ‘The bus service is only in operation for essential journeys. This means critical workers getting to and from work and those having to get to the shops or vital appointments where they have no other means of transport.

‘While our passenger numbers dropped to an all-time low last week, we have begun to see them rise slightly again suggesting people are getting bored at home and starting to venture out unnecessarily.

‘It’s certainly strange to be reporting rising passenger numbers as a bad thing but with lockdown still firmly in place this is particularly concerning.

‘In order to keep our staff safe we need as few people as possible using the service. We hope that the time we are encouraging bus use again is not too far away but for now our message is clear. Stay strong, stay safe and stay at home.’

Last week the company responded to concerns from drivers about a lack of protection from the virus.

Mr Hart said: ‘Our top priority has always been to keep our staff and customers safe during this time. Access to PPE has been a concern, but this is now in the Island and all of our staff have access to the correct equipment.’
