CRY Jersey, which works to rescue and restore young lives broken by poverty, oppression, exclusion and abuse around the world, is aiming to raise money to provide food parcels to some of its 32 projects. Its two charity shops are currently closed because of the coronavirus restrictions.

The CRY Jersey Garden Walk, which has been inspired by the ‘2.6 Challenge’ that has gone viral around the UK as a way to support charities during the Covid-19 pandemic, is due to take place tomorrow. Those taking part are asked to walk either 2, 2.6 or 6 miles either around their garden or during their two hours of time allowed outside of their home.

A Zoom exercise class is also due to take place in the morning.

Participants are asked to collect sponsorship or make a donation via the charity’s Virgin Giving page.

The original 2.6 Challenge was created following the postponing of the London Marathon last month. Participants have been completing a huge range of tasks related to the numbers 2.6 or 26, which share links with the rough distance of a marathon in miles and the date it was due to be held in London this year – 26 April.

CRY Jersey general manager Jane Allchin said: ‘We currently have 32 projects around the world helping to provide education, feeding centres, livelihood projects and support for refugees. Currently many of the projects have had to close, as the coronavirus hits their countries. We wanted to raise funds to provide food parcels for some of CRY’s projects.

‘With parents unable to work because of lockdowns, they haven’t been able to provide for their families. Many were already relying on meals provided at school, so without CRY’s help these children would be going hungry. CRY are focusing on providing essential food supplies to as many families as possible.’
