Reports first came in to the emergency services at 9.49pm and two fire engines – one from the Western Station and another from Rouge Bouillon – responded.
On arrival, two firefighters entered the property to extinguish a ‘well-established’ blaze while another crew entered the apartment above to ensure no one was in the building and that the fire had not spread.
Paramedics attended the incident but no one was injured.
Watch Commander Bailey-Walker from Red Watch, said: ‘The quick actions by a passer-by in calling the Fire and Rescue Service immediately ensured that this fire, although serious, didn’t escalate into a fully involved house fire.
‘Their call definitely made a difference to the outcome of this incident.’
The States police are now investigating the incident.
