The blast was so loud it could be felt as well as heard, and people in the area speculated whether there had been an incident at La Collette.
One local even thought it could have been a sonic boom from a plane.
But the cause of the blast was, apparently, rather more mundane – it was one of the back tyres of a Geo Marine truck exploding.
