The Jersey Street Elites group decided to shelve its proposed round-Island convoy after being advised by the police that the event would be a potential breach of Covid-19 regulations on gatherings.
Organiser Steven Pacheco set up the event as an attempt to show Islanders that an interest in cars does not equate to anti-social behaviour, with attendees urged to ‘be on their best behaviour’ during the convoy with ‘no speeding or revving of cars’.
‘We are not boy racers, we are simple people who have love and a passion for cars and we take pride in them,’ he said.
‘Our plan was to meet up with our modified cars and do a nice quiet slow drive around the Island to prove to the few uneducated and judgmental people that it’s not all of us causing a disturbance.’
Jersey Street Elites was set up in 2019 and has a Facebook page with just over 500 members.
A police spokeswoman said officers had spoken to the organiser and advised that the event was considered likely to be in breach of gathering restrictions.
Mr Pacheco said he was disappointed not to be able to proceed with the event, but added: ‘I have to respect that we are in the middle of a pandemic.’
