PLANS to convert a town gym into flats, which could provide ‘much-needed housing’ in St Helier, have been lodged.
If the application is approved, Curves Jersey, in Oxford Road, would become six apartments spread across three floors.
Planning agent Nicholas Socrates, of Socrates Architects, said: ‘The development is well planned and will provide much-needed housing in the area without causing significant environmental impact.’
A new two-storey extension would be required to construct the apartments on top of the existing building, which is near the Millennium Town Park.
The proposal, lodged by applicant Astralis Ltd, includes three one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments.
Mr Socrates added: ‘Re-using an existing building for a conversion from commercial to residential is a more sustainable option than a demolition and rebuild alternative. This is because it reduces the amount of construction waste and associated carbon emissions, while also preserving the embodied energy and heritage value of the original building.
‘Additionally, repurposing an existing building can contribute to the revitalisation of a community and promote sustainable urban development.’
The architect added that the proposed development would meet the criteria set out in the government’s Bridging Island Plan by providing housing for Islanders in a ‘sustainable and responsible manner’.
