The British city was confirmed as host for 2022 last month following the withdrawal of Durban, which had shooting on its programme before being stripped of its duties because of financial breaches. However, leading figures behind Birmingham’s campaign have omitted the sport from its initial schedule, with early suggestions pointing towards possible returns for T20 cricket and rugby sevens.

India have indicated they will formally oppose the decision, while the International Shooting Sport Federation are due to add their weight to the argument.

‘They’re really cutting us off at the knee caps,’ said Commonwealth Games Association of Jersey president Paul du Feu.

‘If we get the opportunity to speak at the Commonwealth Games Federation meeting in the Gold Coast [in April] they can expect Jersey to stand up and make a point. It is a democracy, and if you get enough small nations like the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar alongside India and Australia then suddenly there’s a bit of movement. I hope that they will re-think.’

Fullbore shooter Colin Mallett won Jersey’s only gold medal in 1990, and teamed up in the same year with his father, Cliff, to claim bronze in the pairs.
