Charity Cup: Le Rougetel and Solomon put down early markers for St Peter

Sol Solomon started the season off with a pair of goals for the Premiership hopefuls – one from two yards, one from 35 – and substitute Charlie Petulla rounded off the scoring following a second-half stunner from junior Ben Le Rougetel.

The Reds will face either Rozel or Trinity next Tuesday, after the latter have met at Springfield for the Jersey Football Combination’s first Friday night fixture of the season.

‘We’re very happy,’ said St Peter coach Jon Welsh.

‘I think we controlled the game from start to finish and played some really good football for this stage of the season.

‘We’ve trained hard for the last five or six weeks and it showed. We moved the ball well and it could have been a couple more. Their ‘keeper played very well.’

Had it not been for the efforts of St Ouen shot-stopper Luke Duncan, St Peter could have been out of sight well before half-time. Solomon and Jake Baker had fierce goal-bound strikes blocked superbly in the opening 40 minutes as the visitors searched for the lead, and it was only through a dose of misfortune that he was beaten before the break. Solomon found an open goal from 35 yards after Duncan’s hindered clearance from the edge of the box fell straight at his feet.

There was, however, nothing fortunate about St Peter’s second goal, with Millfield School student Le Rougetel unleashing a first-touch, curling bullet from 25 yards after St Ouen had needlessly conceded a corner from Shaun Heslop’s back-pass.

Premier League goalkeepers would have struggled to intervene, let alone Duncan, as the ball smashed off the underside of the crossbar in the top right corner before bouncing back up into the roof of the net.

Solomon tapped home his second and St Peter’s third after team-mate Calvin Weir met a looping cross from the left, and Petulla’s late attempt from outside the box provided a fourth, via Duncan’s fumble over the line.
