The former professional player, who has a Premier League title to his name, took control of the Island men’s team in February, and oversaw a first inter-insular victory in five years a month later, before guiding his team to promotion in the County Championships in May. And the 27-year-old is hoping those positive results can provide a launchpad for the season ahead.

The draw for the EH Championships has yet to take place, but this weekend Jersey welcome two English club sides – Eastbourne and Richmond – for a series of friendly matches. The visitors will each play the Island first team on Saturday, before facing a Jersey ‘development’ squad on Sunday.

‘We had a great finish to last season,’ said Millar. ‘And I’m delighted to see that those results have led to there being a really positive attitude at pre-season training.

‘The challenge now is to build on those performances and take our recent form into the EH Championships this year.’

He added: ‘With so many players attending training, competition for places has been really intense, which is just what we’re after.

‘I’ve been particularly impressed with some of the junior players, stepping up to senior training for the first time this summer … with a development side playing on Sunday, it’s a great opportunity for those young guys to test themselves against top-quality opposition.’

Jersey, sponsored by Rathbones, will play Eastbourne at 11 am on Saturday, before facing Richmond at 4.30 pm. The development side will face Richmond at 11.30 am on Sunday, and Eastbourne at 2.30 pm. All at Les Quennevais.

Jersey will enter Tier 2 of the EH Championships, previously referred to as the EH Trophy. The first round is scheduled to take place on 28 October.
