Island players answer Parishes of Jersey FC call

Nine of the Island’s successful 2018 Muratti Vase team are included to face Yorkshire in the Sunday afternoon fixture at St Peter Football Club on 21 October.

Former Muratti captain Luke Watson and the squad will wear the club’s white and red shirt for the first time, along with one junior in the 15-player squad – St Clement’s Tom Harris – a midfielder who skippered Jersey to victory in the Nigel Gavey U16 Muratti in March.

Scott said: ‘I’m really happy with the squad and I think it’s one of the strongest representative squads seen for a while.

‘As with all Island squads there are players who are unavailable, but I’ve been busy speaking with players and watching games and I’ve been impressed.

‘It’s a strong and balanced squad with youth and experience.

‘I’ve had a number of conversations with Luke [Watson]. He has lost his love for the game but hopefully this fixture will kick-start his playing career again.

‘It’s a big call to make because Luke has not played a lot, but he’s very talented and I’m not worried about his fitness either because he had a really good run in the Jersey Marathon last weekend [finishing 17th overall in under three hours].

‘Tom [Harris] is just 17 and I’ve included him for the experience – and why not? If we are looking to qualify for the World Cup in 2020, then this will help him gain experience and hopefully he will then come into his own going forward.

‘Tom is talented, too. He has all the attributes and he is well up for the challenge and looking forward to playing with the experienced players like Jack Boyle and Luke [Watson] on match day.’

The Parishes of Jersey FC squad will meet for a training session next Wednesday evening at Haute Vallée School before meeting up early on match day for further preparation and lunch.

The Jersey club were accepted into the football federation for independent nations not recognised by Fifa early last month and the game will act as a full ConIFA international with ranking points being awarded.

The fixture, sponsored by DIS Electrical Contractors Ltd and arranged under the newly-formed Jersey International Football Alliance, kicks off at 3.30 pm.

The Jersey squad is: Jack Boyle (captain), Euan van der Vliet, Michael Weir, Jack Cannon, Adam Trotter, Zeljko Martinovic, Luke Watson and Harris Curtis (all St Paul’s), Matt Donaldson, Calvin Weir, Luke Campbell and Jake Baker (St Peter), Tom Harris (St Clement), Karl Hinds (Trinity) and James Quérée (JTC Jersey Wanderers).
