Bulls turn to youth for last game of the season

JERSEY BULLS’ last fixture of the campaign has extended an opportunity to several youngsters, given the last-minute nature of the re-arrangement.

The Islanders were set travel to Colliers Wood on 12 April, however high winds prevented the side from making the journey.

There was a brief suggestion that the fixture might be scrapped, but Jersey have decided to play today, highlighting the ‘commitment within the club’.

Captain James Queree said: ‘I don’t think you can doubt the commitment of the club from top to bottom.

‘Given the late notice of the fixture, we are taking a mixed squad, which gives an opportunity to some of the younger players in the set-up.

‘Our team have family and work commitments and the scheduling has weighed heavy on us for the past few months.

‘What is great is that we are all part of the same team, and it’s been brilliant to see some people rightly given a chance.’

Fergus Boyle, recently named Jersey U16 player of the year, as well as Joel McKinley and Darryl Mvalo have been included for the trip.

Despite the fact the Bulls have failed in their ultimate goal of promotion, Queree believes when they take a step back, that improvement has been made.

He said: ‘Our aim was to get promoted. So when you reflect, it hasn’t been a great season. But when you look back and unwind the year, you can really see how fine the margins are at this level.

‘At the end of the day, the table doesn’t lie and the two teams above us deserve to go up.

‘But most of the games that we dropped points in or lost, we gave ourselves the opportunities.

‘That is what makes it hard to digest.

‘You can see on Saturday [6-0 win over Redhill] that when everything comes together and the pressure is off a little bit, that we can be a brilliant team.

‘We just need to become a little more street-wise and see off a few more of the games we should have.’

The Bulls match at Colliers Wood gets underway at 7.30pm this evening.

Jersey Bulls to face Colliers Wood: Euan Van Der Vliet, Fergus Boyle, Jack Steel, James Queree, Jay Giles, Sammy Sutcliffe, Joe Kilshaw, Joel McKinley, Jonny Le Quesne, Leandro Vieira, Luke Watson, Darryl Mvalo, Fraser Barlow, Miguel Carvalho.
