Laurent Depoitre: Confidence is low at Huddersfield

Striker Laurent Depoitre admitted confidence has been affected by Huddersfield’s six-game winless run in the Premier League.

The Terriers were installed as odds-on favourites for relegation after their latest defeat at Stoke, while a much-changed line-up was on Saturday held to a draw by Sky Bet Championship strugglers Birmingham in the FA Cup.

“The confidence could be better because we haven’t won for a few games,” said Depoitre, who did not feature in Saturday’s fourth-round tie as a consequence of David Wagner making seven changes.

“But I think we know our qualities. We know we can win against good teams so we have to stay positive and work and the points will come.”

Wagner was keen to give fringe players game time in the cup tie, but the Terriers’ disjointed display was punctuated by misplaced passes and poor first touches.

“Yes, but there were a lot of players who haven’t played much this season so it’s difficult when all of the team doesn’t know each other very well. I think we have to see the positive things,” Depoitre said.

“We knew that even if it was a team from the Championship it would be a hard game.

“We fought well and were good in the first half, but I think we should have done better after scoring the first goal.

“Normally when we score first we manage the game better and win it, but it happens. We will be ready for the replay.”

Huddersfield, two points clear of the bottom three, must first bid to halt their slide in the top flight against Liverpool at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday.

A trip to Old Trafford follows that next Saturday against a Jose Mourinho side gunning for revenge after their shock defeat in Huddersfield in October.

Depoitre fired what proved to be the winner that day as Town snapped a similar six-game winless run in the league.

“I’m confident we will stay up,” the Belgian added. “With the group we have and the mentality we have, I think we will stay up.

“But we have to fight now in every game and take as many points as possible. I’m confident we will.”
