Marit Bjoergen made Winter Olympics history with a silver medal in the women’s cross country on day one of the Pyeonchang Games on Saturday.

Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla claimed the first gold medal of the Games, her third Olympic gold, in 40;44.9 in the women’s 7.5km and 7.5k skiathlon.

But 37-year-old Norwegian Bjoergen, known as the ‘Iron Lady’, had as much reason to celebrate, as her silver gave her a record 11 Olympics cross country medals in the event.

She moved clear of Russian Raisa Smetanina and Italian Stefania Belmonndo, who also had 10 cross country medals to their name.

Bjoergen finished 7.8 seconds behind Kalla with Finn Kirsta Parmokoski a further 10.1 seconds back claiming the bronze.
