Juventus v Tottenham – story of the match

Christian Eriksen completed a remarkable Tottenham comeback as they rallied from two down to draw with Juventus in the Champions League last 16.

Spurs will take two precious away goals into the second leg at Wembley next month after Harry Kane’s clinical finish and a clever free-kick from the superb Eriksen ensured a fascinating contest finished 2-2 in Turin.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were on the brink after Gonzalo Higuain put Juventus two up within nine minutes, the second a penalty after Ben Davies fouled Federico Bernardeschi.

But Kane pulled one back, only Juve’s second goal conceded in 17 games, before Higuain missed a second penalty in what could prove a decisive moment in this tie.

Star man – Christian Eriksen

Despite Higuain just missing out on his hat-trick, Eriksen pulled the strings in midfield for Tottenham as he dictated play and got his side back into the tie. His composure on the ball frustrated Juventus and he was instrumental in the build-up to Kane’s goal before deservedly getting on the scoresheet himself with a well-taken free-kick to equalise with 18 minutes remaining.

Terrible 10 for Tottenham

The first leg seemed to be over before it began for Spurs as Higuain ran riot in the opening 10 minutes. Mauricio Pochettino’s side had barely crossed the halfway line when the former Real Madrid and Napoli striker fired in a sumptuous volley in the second minute. The Argentinian doubled his tally from the penalty spot seven minutes later as the visitors got off to a terrible start.

The Old Lady came into the match with a formidable 22-match unbeaten home record in the Champions League – having not lost at the Allianz Stadium since April 2013, when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to eventual winners Bayern Munich. The reigning Serie A champions added a ninth draw to the run but it will feel more like a loss after letting a two-goal cushion slip. Allegri’s side had also conceded just one goal in their previous 15 matches in all competitions, but Kane and Eriksen ensured it will be a tight second leg at Wembley in three weeks’ time.

Spurs fans remembered Ryan Mason on the day that the former academy graduate retired from football at the age of 26 due to a serious head injury he sustained in January 2017. The travelling fans chanted ‘There’s only one Ryan Mason’ throughout the match. Mason made 70 appearances in eight years at the club, during which he had loan spells at Yeovil, Doncaster, Millwall, French side Lorient and Swindon, before moving to Hull in August 2016.
