Stuart Broad strikes twice and early as England make strong start

Stuart Broad took two early wickets as England made a strong start on the opening morning of the second Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

Seam bowler Broad had Imam-ul-Haq caught by Joe Root for a duck inside the second over, before trapping fellow Pakistan opener Azhar Ali lbw.

England, attempting to salvage a drawn series from 1-0 down following a nine-wicket defeat at Lord’s, began the match with four maiden overs, the first time they had done so in a Test since playing Australia at The Oval in 1993.

Opener Imam had been given a brief reprieve following a review into a seemingly strong lbw claim from a Broad delivery on the second ball of the second over.

Broad got his man just four balls later, though, as Imam edged a drive into the hands of captain Root at third slip.

There was prodigious swing at times, for James Anderson especially, and Broad made a second breakthrough at the start of the 10th over when he trapped Ali lbw for two.

Following the early losses, Pakistan moved on to 24 for two at the end of the 14th over, with Haris Sohail unbeaten on 15 having struck three boundaries – including one which flew just over Jos Buttler at gully off Broad.
