Joe Root extended his remarkable record against India as England took tea at 163 for three at Edgbaston.
Skipper Root reached the tea interval unbeaten on 65 after passing the milestone of 6,000 Test runs when he had made 43.
Root became the quickest England batsman to reach that landmark in time, five years and 231 days since his Test debut.

The 27-year-old’s half-century also saw him pass 50 in every one of his dozen Tests against India.
England lost Alastair Cook for 13 before lunch, to a wonderful Ravi Ashwin delivery which turned and dislodged his off-stump bail, and Keaton Jennings (42) and Dawid Malan (8) after it.
Mohammed Shami took both wickets to boost India but, fittingly enough on Yorkshire Day, Tykes pair Root and Bairstow (27 not out) shared an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 51 in the second session.
