Bernard Tomic edges Fabio Fognini to clinch Chengdu Open title

Australia’s Bernard Tomic saved four match points before winning Sunday’s Chengdu Open final with victory over Fabio Fognini of Italy.

Tomic, the world number 123, prevailed courtesy of his powerful serve and resilience to claim his fourth career title at the expense of Fognini, who had led 3-0, 6-3 and 7-6 in the final-set tiebreak.

The world number 13 had been attempting to become the first Italian to win four titles in a season, but instead it was the 25-year-old Australian who celebrated his first tournament victory since July 2015.

At the Shenzhen Open, Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, a qualifier, beat France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-5 2-6 6-4 in 2hrs 20mins for his first career title.
