When James Anderson found Dimuth Karunaratne’s edge with a tempting outswinger, the resulting take was bread and butter for a keeper of Foakes’ reputation. More remarkable than the catch was the timing – just the second ball of Foakes’ first innings in the field. Only Australia’s Peter Nevill, in the Lord’s Ashes Test of 2015, has opened his account behind the stumps at such an early stage.
