No referendum on the Bailiff in the States

Last year, the States agreed to hold a referendum on whether the Bailiff should be replaced in the Chamber with an elected speaker.

It came after then-Senator Sir Philip Bailhache successfully argued that the matter should be put to the public.

However, Members this week overturned that decision, arguing that deciding who presides over States sittings should be a matter for the Assembly and that the public appetite for a referendum on the issue was minimal.
