An eight-second clip of the shorts-and-T-shirt clad motorcyclist – driving eastbound along the pedestrian walkway of the dual-carriage way – was captured by a passenger in a car travelling next to them on Sunday afternoon.

The footage, which shows the driver on a black and red Aprilla motorcycle next to another rider who is on the road, was passed to the States police, who tracked down the visitors and spoke to them. The JEP understands they were due to leave the Island on Monday and were renting the motorcycles.

A spokeswoman for the States police said the bikes were returned, early, to the rental company and after being ‘dealt with appropriately’ the riders were allowed to leave on the boat back to France.

In a statement, the force said: ‘We had several reports of motorbikes driving dangerously on pavements yesterday and today, with a video of the bikes appearing on a local Facebook page.

‘After some inquiries we located the bikes and riders, who are visitors to the Island. The bikes were taken away earlier today and returned to the rental company and the riders are being dealt with appropriately. Thank you to the people that reported this to us.’

Commenting online, several Islanders said that if a resident along the road had been coming out of their home onto the pavement it could have led to a serious accident.

One person said: ‘Pass this onto the police. If anyone came out of one those gates it would have been very nasty. Absolute idiot.’

Others claimed the rider was with two others and they had been seen around other parts of the Island, particularly on Queen’s Road, ‘weaving in and out of traffic’.
